La La La Ronde...

No rest for the wicked...

Today was La Ronde... Again with friends Joel and Philippe...

It was their first time on a Roller Coaster... They seemed keen at the beginning so we chose 'Le Monstre'
A) because it's a Wooden classic.
B) because it's a rough and tumble one. (If that manage that, then the rest should have been golden...

So after a 25 min wait... not bad for The end of July on a sunny day.... we were on our way up!

Well no sooner were we on our way up then it started to spit rain! We got through the ride, and the Toulousians seemed no worse for the ware.

We got a bite to eat and then headed over to the Goliath. after the rumble of Le Monstre the Goliath would be like a dream... It's soooooo smooth. We made it through that line in about 15 mins... it always goes fast there. But it seems it was a bit too much for Philippe who kept his eyes closed throughout and Joel only barely had his eyes open.

After that we toned it down and watched the Diving show.

And then the Tour de Ville. Not even a roller coaster just a bunch of chairs suspended on changes that go round in a circle... Well. Philippe was out before he was even in! We then hit the Ferris Wheel and enjoyed that for all of the three rotations they give you! But while it's a short ride you do get some incredible views of La Ronde and Montreal...

After that we did a lot of walking... and I mean a LOT. We went over to the Manitou but hey both waited off to the side. It was only Didier and myself... I hate long waits and this was going to be a long one... but we did it and 50 min later we were spinning in the air! LOVE THAT MANITOU!

More walking and then we looked at the Vampire... and Cobra and and and. The Toulousians took the 'value added' 6 minute Helicopter ride and enjoyed it, but I thought the $55 per person ticket price was just a bit much.

We ended the day on the Pitoune... your basic log / flume ride, an original from the 1967 World Expo ...

and then decided to call it a day.

Tomorrow... Ottawa...

Oh Yea! We party-hardy!

Front row bad, back row good

There are times when being in the front row, or front of the line is a plus...

-At your favourite Comedy Show.
-At your favourite Singers concert.
-When buying tickets.
-At a Boxing Day Sale.
-In a school Cafeteria.
On a roller coaster.
...and so on...

But there are indeed times when it's not such a great thing...

-At an Insult Comic's show.
-At Church (no chance of grabbing a few zzzzzzz)
-At the Movies on a 'first date' (Back Row manditory!)
Or...
-on the Saut Moutons. (Rapids Jet Boat)
...that is unless you're REALLY thirsty and want to see what is was like to be one of the not so lucky ones on the Titanic! :-)

As today's Quote of the day might have already lead you to believe... we went on the Saut Moutons today...

I'm glad to say I did it, along with Didier, and our friends Joel and Philippe from Toulouse. We took the tour from the Old Port of Montreal... And went upstream along the St Lawrence til we arrived at the Lachine Rapids. We were 'lucky' to get the front row of the boat.

...I say 'Lucky' because I would only consider it lucky if you had just come out of the Sahara Desert and REALLY needed a 30 minute long drink of questionably clean St-Lawrence Sea-way water.

This was BEFORE the rapids... notice the NATURAL smiles...

This was AFTER the rapids... notice the smiles now...

Ok, SURE, the ride was exciting, exhilarating even, and from the few minutes we could actually see anything out there... (Trust me you spend a lot of your time with eyes closed, nose pinched shot and holding your breath, as wave after forceful wave of water pummels you in your seat.

There might be some of you out there that say "Well what did you expect?" ... Well I didn't expect to be that dowsed. I DID expect to get to see more of what we were doing... It's like someone that keeps their eyes closed on a roller coaster... what's the point? I think they should really consider 2 things Seat Belts and Scuba Masks. The former because when the thrust the boat into a level 3 rapid on a side angle you get forcefully thrust off to the side, pushing the person next to you, pushing the person next to them and so on, and the person at the end is crammed against the side. The later because as I said you spend all the time you're actually 'shooting' the rapids with your eyes closed.

And then again I'm not sure that I'd still have enjoyed myself all that much because if there's something I hate more, it's having my head underwater... and even though you're on a boat, your head is often 'under water'

On the massive PLUS side of the ride, you get some absolutely SPECTACULAR views of the City!

Will I do it again? Hell no!
Am I glad I did it? Hell yes!

My one suggestion..... if you go, take a seat in the back 1/2 of the boat...

This really deserved an ice cream... don't you agree?

Hello, and welcome aboard.

For your security. Firmly hold the bar in front of you, so that you do not push your neighbour.

The boat will fill with water, do not panic.

If the water comes up to your knees, do not worry, this is normal.
....up to your hips, it should not last too long.
...up to your shoulders, you should start to swim.

Bon saute Mouton!

IdFLQ - And the winners are...

Normally the closing ceremonies are spectacular for the Fireworks competition.. this year... enh!

The Music was AWESOME all music from 1967...or there 'bouts...

But a lot of fun! The fireworks were ok, but nothing "WOW!"

None the less, even Ok fireworks are good Fireworks... so here are a few...

As for the winners... for the first year ever, I got all three... sorta right. I chose all three of the winners. The only difference is the order...

My selections as you will recall were:

GOLD: Germany
SILVER: USA
BRONZE: England

In the end the winners were:

GOLD: England
SILVER: Germany
BRONZE: USA

La Journee de la famille

Today was family day with Didier's Sister (Sylvie), Brother-in-law (Olivier) and Nephew (Raphael)

It all started with a Metro ride out to the Olympic Park.

First Stop was the BioDome. It's always a great time there and even though I've been there, about 8 times since it opened There's always something to see.

And you can just watch the penguins for hours. I took some video, I just have to figure out how to post it here.

After the tour and a quick bite to eat we walked up to the Insectarium... Thank god Raphael was not too impressed. I hate bugs and I hate that place! YUCK!

We then took a nice leisurely promenade through the Botanical gardens...
The Japanese Gardens..

Zen, Bonsai etc.

I saw some sort Hawk?... Took about 10 pics here's one...

Then to the Indigenous (Indian) Gardens. And then the Alpine Gardens...

...and then just as the heavens broke...

The Chinese Gardens...

We took a little rest in the Grand Pavilion...

Family group shot at the Main Gate...

... and then continued on to the Greenhouses.

And after 4 hours of walking we needed an ICE CREAM!

Back home we had a barbeque on the Roof top deck and then finished the evening off with The closing of the Fireworks competition.

A great day was had by all and soon we'll do it again... in 2 weeks? :-)

Excuse me teacher, what's the date?

By my calendar we're only in late July, but as far as TV is concerned, Summer is over...

On 3 separate occasions in the past two days I have seen 'BACK TO SCHOOL" ads on TV. Granted all 3 were on American TV feeds and all were for K-Mart, but c'mon now.... It's only July 26th here!

I'm sorry but this is just NOT acceptable.

While I am a fan of the Staples back-to-School ads, it's JUST NOT TIME YET! Can we just make it to the 2nd week or so of August before we're blasted with these ads?

I don't know who's more upset by these early ads?:

-Teachers? ("Yea, that's right etches, start doubling your anti-depressant meds, the brats are coming back soon...")

-The Parents? ("Yea, that's right etches, come give us all your money for over-priced SpongeBob Squarpants and Dora the Explorer and Harry Potter and Bratz labelled pencil cases and duotangs and binders and knapsacks and and and...")

- The Kids? ("Yea, that's right etches, kiss your summer good bye and get ready for 10 more months of readin', ritin' n 'rithmatic")

or...
-Misster-Kitty (Yea that's right betch, get used to seeing these commercials 10 times an hour til the middle of September")

My guess is it's a lose-lose-lose-lose situation here.

IdFLQ - GERMANY

Well tonight was the last competitor for this year's fireworks competition (International des Feux Loto-Quebec) And it was really incredible! There was a consistent display of fireworks both low and high with a couple of lower moments, but overall you could see this display from a fair distance and it never lost my attention.

Their music was mostly classic in nature, although they did not stick to only German composers. The opening piece was an excerpt of Bach's Toccata and Fugue in d minor - one of my all time favourite classical pieces, and certainly one of the most recognized pipe organ peices by him or any other composer. It's a heavy piece, very much at ease next to the bombastic accompaniment of Fireworks. And what was even more interesting to me was an excerpt from Romeo and Juliet by Prokofiev (The Duke's Command) that I felt was missing from France's display, this past Saturday; although it was not my preferred OSM rendition, it was played nonetheless. The music continues along it's classical bent, and included Offenbach's 'Galop' from Orpheus in the Underworld (you know... the music you always hear when French 'Ladies' are dancing the Can-Can) which was a hit with Didier and two other French guests. And then th music changed into more contemporary instrumental peices, must enjoyable for me was some of Mike Oldfield's Tubular Bells. It's got a slightly eerie feeling (he also well know as the composer for the music to the movie The Exorcist) and that too lent itself well to the pyrotechnics.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say these were my favourites. Not because they were the biggest, or the loudest, or the most original (see Hon Kong's '2 0 0 8' fireworks) but because for me they had the full package: Great music that stood out for me as not being the 'Pop' and current, rather simply selecting music that would go well with the fireworks and be able to hold it's own. They were consistent in their display fully using the sky for their canvas. Great colours and interesting individual sizes and shapes. Well choreographed and synchronized to the music. And finally their Finale was easy to spot (You know some times you're like.. 'Is this it? is this the Finale? no wait, This is it. Is it?) ... and the real test for me... I actually clapped at the end. :-)

Ok enough yammering... here's some pics...

And now... my final tally on this year's competition...

GOLD: Germany
SILVER: USA
BRONZE: England

HONOURABLE MENTION: Canada

And then you have...
Hong Kong
France
Spain
Mexico

Come back on Saturday night to see if I was even at all remotely close.

Quote of the Week (15)

"I don't really talk dirty to be dirty. It's just a way of communication. Some people are just born cussers."
-Dolly Parton

Freaky Ducks!

OK so part of our weekend activities was a walk down around Old Montréal and Old Port. We walked and walked and walked... and at a momentary resting point I looked down towards the boats docked at the small marina between the King Edward and Jacques Cartier Piers when I saw not one, but two ducks balancing on a rope slung in the water between a boat and the wharf.

Ever seen Aquaphobic Ducks before?

This is now my Desktop pic at the office. They're just too cute.

Freaky Dinks!

Ok, so while reviewing pics of this past weekend I decided I would put up a pic of 'Les Français" from the Fireworks on Saturday night, but I decided against adding them to the actual fireworks post because this pic deserves it's OWN post.

Three of the guests were Sandrine (a good friend of Didier's sister Martine) and her two children Arthur and (I think) Pauline... although it could have been Caroline... not sure as there seems to be some disagreement between Didier and I on what her name is actually. Anyhoo this is not the point I wish to illustrate...

Having met them 2 weeks prior we were already aware that while perfectly cute, lovely blonde haired and blue eyed, they are deviousnesses and just a smidge high strung... (I'd make allusions to French Poodles - having once owned one I know what I speak of - but perhaps that's just not nice... comparing children to dogs... and really, when you think about it, which is more insulted... the dogs or the children... HEH!) They were a lively duo to say the least, the girl with the most incredible vocals... Certainly if one is to excel and utilize one's natural talents, she should consider a career in Opera or perhaps recording car and fire alarms...

... annnnnnnnnyhoo, where was I? ... oh yes... so I took a group photo after I arrived home from Family Guy Live, before the Fireworks began. As I was editing the pics I noticed there was a lot of Red-Eye in the pic and wanted to wait and edit it before uploading. This morning I edited the photo and 'de-redeyed' all... except... that the children's eyes were unaffected. I did their eyes again, and still no improvement. So again and again and again, to a total of 7 times, I attempted to take the evil out of their eyes... but that evil is there to stay.

Click on the pic for a larger version and see for yourself.

In the photo:
(back row) Joel, and Philippe (the Toulousains), Didier and Yours Truly.
(front row) Devil Child #1 - Pauline, or Caroline..., Mother Sandrine and Devil Child #2 - Arthur

Devil Children I say!
Evil.
Spawn.

IdFLQ - FRANCE

Vive La France? I'm no so sure after their fireworks.

Ok here's the thing, even bad fireworks displays are good, IF you just like to look at things exploding in air... and I CAN see the beauty in that, really I can. but... I think I might be getting jaded, I'm requiring more and more to impress me. And I know that what pleases one person or group will not please others but WOW I don't think I've ever been so unimpressed.

The night's music was 'Romeo and Juliet' I cannot say that I recognized any of the music from any product of R&J I've ever seen including (TV, MOVIE, BALLET and ORCHESTRAL) I'm particularly fond of Prokofiev's music (R&J and otherwise, I think he was a music genius), and it's a shame too because certain excerpts of it would translate VERY well to fireworks... specially "Dance of the Knights" and "The Duke's Command" . Instead we got music from 'Lord of the Rings' ??? (huh? what?) , some Rap Music (which I cannot stomach at the best of times) and some other various music that I could not recognize from anything. At least there was a certain romance and traditional folksy appeal.

The fireworks themselves were ok, but there were very few high ones. and I mean VERY few. The majority were on level with the Jacques Cartier, which while tall, is by no means impressive when you're talking pyrotechnics. It's a difficult thin I am sure creating tableaux in air that encompass high, and medium level fireworks as well as sparklers, and twizzlers and such on the lake itself, but sadly that didn't happen here. Yes it's true we do not have a perfect view from our roof top, but I know what's high and what's not, and these were 'not'.

Keep in mind I was watching these fireworks with a group of people ALL from France.... 2 from Toulouse, one from Nantes and 3 from Aix-en-Province and while the children screamed 'Vive Le France" a couple of times, that was about as far as their pride went...

So here are some pics, the few that turned out and were at all impressive (ie above the Bridge) I take on average 70 pics a night... and about 25 to33% turn out good... for tonight's, I took 77 and I have 9 here to show, or 11 %

Oh well, again any fireworks are fun, these were ok.

My standings remain unaffected...

GOLD: USA
SILVER: England

Seems Misster-Kitty and the TickleBear are coming to odds with the last few Fireworks displays. Only one to go... Germany on Wed night and then the closing ceremonies on Saturday night...

Family Guy Live MUCHO UNCENSORED!

All I can say is that Family Guy Live was dirty!

and Me likey!

Me likey!

Me likey!

Me likey!

And lookie look... Misster-Kitty had a date!

Didier could not make it (see The French are coming! The French are coming!) he was in charge of a BBQ fo a bunch o' Francais. So I though who is a fan(atic) of Family Guy... N@ is! And so I offered up me extra ticket.

What was interesting is that the live reading was from an episode this past season called "'Airport '07" And when Seth MacF announced the episode, the audience was not that responsive, he even commented about that. After it was all over N@ asked me If I had ever seen that episode and I said No, and neither had she. I'm thinking it was never aired or possible pre-empted here in Canada. At any rate it was very amusing although I'm a little unsure about the 'High School Prom Trash Can Baby' musical number... I've never though, Hm that's in bad taste, one of my fav episodes is where Peter is in a barbershop quartet and announces to a patient in a hospital that he has AIDS... ("...not HIV but... full blown AIDS" ) but the trash can baby scene had me waivering...

What is impressive with Seth MacF is he is the voice of Peter, Brian Stewie, Quaigmire and Tom Tucker, all of who had many many lines in this episode and at a certain point he was reading whole conversations by himself. No small feat!

When the episode was over, Seth MacF did a couple song numbers... "The FCC" and another that escapes me at the moment... and then Mike Henry as "Herbert"(the senior pedophile sang 'Some where that's green" from Little Shop of Horrors. Later Alex Borstein and Seth MacF sang 'You don't bring me flowers" but changed a couple of the lyrics to "You don't eat my pussy..." "You don't cup my scrtom.." and so on. As I said... MUCHO UNCENSORED. a Freakin RIOT! There were a few 'fucks' and other naughty words thrown in throughout the show too. I like me some potty humour and this show had it.

What was even more impressive, was the FCC song, which is all Seth MacF... it's Stewie, Brian and Peter. It's one thing to do all the voices back and forth, but to also be singing...without reading the lyrics. That was incredible. BRA-VO!

What I like about the show is they are equal opportunity in mocking, poking fun at and ensuring that everyone and everything is a target, and yet you know they do so with love.(well mostly) They make points with social commentary and also have more than their fair share of attacking the American government... regardless of the adminstration. But it their mastery of pop culture references, far more and far better than the Simpsons or South Park that REALLY makes this show for me.

---

THE highlight for me was when he did the "Lois, Lois, Lois, Lois, Mamma, Mamma, Mamma, Mamma, Mah, Mah, Mah, Mah, Mommy, Mommy, Mommy, Mommy..." lines... that is my all time favourite and it was freakin sweet seeing him do it live.. .

They did a little Q&A and then thet gave the audience a sneak peak of the up-coming season's premiere... a spoof of Star Wars... it is gonna be AWSONE! Cannot Wait... and then faster than you can say "Giggity Giggity Giggity" poof... 2 hours alter it was over.

I didn't get my chance to grope Seth G or Seth MacF but given the opportunity I'd hade done both of em they're both patooties!

After the show I actually met Corn too! (A friend of his won tickets too so it seems) What's funny, is he's shorter than I expected! I guess cause in comparrison to N@ in their vids he IS technically taller... I guess for some the camera ads a few pounds... for corn it adds a few inches. (well in height anyway.. I've not seen any other videos to confirm any other heights! hah!)

---

What I for sure is that as long as they come back I will go see em!

The French are coming! The French are coming!

Starting tonight until some time around the 15th of August, our home is becoming a B&B for friends coming across the 'big pond'. Friends of Didier's from Toulouse France: Joel and Philippe; and Philippe from Rennes. Not to mention his Sister and Brother-in-law and nephew from Laval, France will also be in town from July 26th to Aug 19th!

Best part is house rules are, any house guests from France must meet a 2 bottle of Champagne minimum! :-)

It's going to be a lot of fun and I get to improve my French a bit more... I've not met the Toulousians before. Nor have I met this particular Sister of Didier's (I met his other sister and brother-in-law and the 2 nephews, affectionately know as the Popoffs... and also his parents last year. That was great. we had great visits with both) but looking forward to it for sure! I've met Philippe from Rennes two years ago and he was also here last year... He's a total sweetie and as I've mentioned previously I'm especially looking forward to seeing him again. What we lack in communication skills (Fr vs Eng) we more than make up for in humour and cattiness (pun intended! HA!)

CAN-NOT WAIT!
:-)

So be expecting some fun reports on our escapades with 'les Français' in the coming weeks... not to mention that next weekend is Pride and WE are going to be on VAY-CAY as of next Friday!

So y'all have a great weekend now, ya'hear!

IdFLQ - CANADA

Oh Canada... or should I say Awwwwwwwwwwww, Canada.

Canada ran technically a foul tonight... And such a shame What a PERFECT display it would have been otherwise....

Like Mexico a few weeks back, about 5 minutes into the program no music and no fireworks. It was 10:30pm before they got back up and running, and that's an incredible shame because that all but takes them out of the running.

The show started back and for another minute or so you wondered if it was actually really going to continue (too much low action...) and then WOW! they went for it!

It was an interesting concept, called OLYMPIAN ZEUS. The music was all different themes from prior Olympics. Some of which you easily remembered, like LA in 84, and (shudder) the Calgary Olympics in 88... (GOD that was some awful music!)

The fireworks were in incredibly synchronized with the music and there was LOTS of BIG and HIGH fireworks... The colours were amazing and well just a little gay... LOTS of Rainbow colour displays! :-)

Anyhoo...

some pics for y'all...

And now the standings... while I think Canada should be in the top three, because of such a blunder and a 30 minute wait I'm afraid they will have to be an Honourable Mention...

so...

GOLD: USA
SILVER: England
BRONZE: Hong Kong

HONOURABLE MENTION: Canada

The 4400

When Didier returned from Québec City last week (Tuesday July 10th), he had the first two seasons of a show called 'the 4400' on DVD. Our friends Jeff and Stef lent them to us. They sat on the table for a day, and then on Wednesday night (since we didn't go to La Ronde because of the weather) we slipped one of the disks in the machine and watched the pilot. Well, it was instant addiction for us.

Now let me say this. I'm not a fan of Science Fiction. Rarely does a movie or TV show with a Sci-Fi bent entertain me, very much less impress me, but This show did! I think because it's not all about spaceships, so many other inhabitants of other planets and solar systems all looking a but too much like humans and universal decoders, di-lithium crystals and worm holes solving every problem (no offence to Star Trek, you've obviously have your fans)

The first episode starts with a 'comet' racing toward Earth. Countries around the planet send nuclear missiles at it to save the planet, but they have no effect at all, and the firey ball continues to head toward the Earth and it's unavoidable destruction... but... the balls stops and hovers just over a lake near Seattle Washington, and then suddenly implodes. After the dust (literally) settles, you see the 4400 standing on the beach and shoreline. They are all missing persons from the last century from all over the globe. They are all instantly put in quarantine and so the show begins...

The first couple of episodes are all about setting up the main plot lines, the good the bad and then strange. Seems some of the 4400 have new special abilities. Special healing powers, telekinesis, prophecy, heightened strength and so on.

Questions remain. Who took them? Who returned them? Where were they? What was done to them? and so on. At first, it would seem they are leaning toward the popular Alien Abduction, but near the end of Season One you find out it's actually humans from the future that perpetrated this in an attempt to save the Earth from some other destruction. Although not clear yet, (at least as far as we are now into Season 2) it's seems that it's due to some combination of over population, raping and pillaging of the Earths natural resources and so on...

The 4400 were sent back, some with good and some with possible bad powers, and of course none with instruction manuals. It's up to The National Threat Assessment Command (NTAC), a division of the Department of Homeland Security to figure out whats what. There are your two main investigators Tom Baldwin and Diana Skouris - a la Fox Mulder and Dana Scully.

In fact the show is a bit like the X Files in that every episode has a different 4400 or two being investigated. Trying to understand just what they can do and how it not only affects them but all those around them. And then there are larger story lines continuing every episode. And just like the X-files you have lots of government cover-up and otherwise wrenching the works.

While there are some occasional hard to believe moments in the plot and the 'powers' of the 4400, it's otherwise rather believable and set in the current day.
If you come across it, WATCH IT!

---

My only real issue here is, up til these DVDs, I have never seen or heard of this show before. It airs on the USA Network (not one that we get) and it does not appear to be on any other channel we know of. So for now we continue to watch the DVDs of Season 2 and soon Season 3, and then like our friends in Québec City we'll have to wait for Season 4 (on air now) to come out on DVD...

There's no PRIDE in Divers/Cité

Divers/Cité used to mean PRIDE to Montréal's Gay Lesbian, Bisexual, Transsexual and Transgender Communities. But in the past few years that pride has been diminished, tarnished. At this point the tarnish is more like a corrosive rust.

- - - - - - -

Divers/Cité was born 15 years ago to replace a very dysfunctional Montréal Gay Pride Festival and it's fractional and seemingly own homophobic committee. It was when the then Pride Committee indicated that Drag Queens, Leather Men and as they put it other extreme and fringe groups were not welcome in the Pride Parade because they sad that the media only focused on them, enforcing a bad reputation; fostering a poor appearance for the 'regular' gays and lesbians...

Sad really, when you consider that the Modern Gay/Lesbian Rights Movement was born out of the Stonewall Riots on June 28th 1969 between the New York City Police and Gays, Lesbians and Transgendered people. The riots lasted a few days and countless Gays, Lesbians and Transgendered people were beaten and arrested. It was, and still is that resilience and the conviction of those that countered the Police Force's brutality that for me and many thousands, nay, millions of others around the globe foster and remember, ESPECIALLY at PRIDE. It was a calling to arms if you will, that individually we are weak and easily intimidated and forced into submission, but together we are strong and powerful and can no longer be held down. And that strength fosters not only Pride in the individual but Pride as a group that crosses all lines: Male/Female, All Races, Religions, Ethnic Backgrounds. We are on every continent, in every country, (although some still must hide who and what they are as they could be punished, even put to death.)

Divers/Cité was all encompassing. It's name a play on words for Diversity, a Diverse City. And so it would seem for the first 8-10 years...
---

I cannot recall the exact year, but about five-six years ago there was a shift in the Divers/Cité events. The majority of the events moved outside and to the edge of the Village. At about the same time, as you can suspect, the Parade no longer included the mainstay of floats from the Bars and Restos and other Businesses in the Village. Bad blood was born between Gay Commerce and the Divers/Cité Committee. And this infection would continue to fester and grow...

A few years ago the Committee didn't even plan to close Ste-Catherine St in the Village on the main weekend, where people naturally congregate after the Sunday Afternoon Parade. This was Divers/Cité's attempt to 'stick it' even further to the Gay and Lesbian owned and run businesses, but the Police eventually had to shut down the street because with or without stages and performances, and kiosks selling over priced beer and hot dogs or not, people wanted to congregate where they felt the most pride, and inclusion... within the confines of the village. It's theirs after all and on such a day of Pride and festivity, you not only want to be there, you cannot imagine being any place else.

... and THEN...

2 years ago in the ever shocking, mal-explained and unbelievably planning the Divers/Cité Committee re-scheduled the Pride Parade from it's regular Sunday afternoon time slot to a Monday Night event. And this is where public support for Divers/Cité plummets...

The Parade is the Apex of any Pride Festivities, be they a Day, a Weekend, or a Week in length. It's where those involved pull all the stops, invite not only their LGBTT Brothers and Sisters, but too, the remainder of society. All are welcome, the young and old, families, you name it. This is not only true for Montréal, but any Pride event in ANY city the world round. And in it's time Montréal was one of the biggest... with up to 300,000+ spectators. Now they'd be lucky to get a half to a third of that. Taking a event that used to be the End, the BIG BANG as it were, when more people were free from work and other responsibilities (and in this context I'm not only talking about the spectators, but those IN the parade, on the floats, walking, dancing, etc) and then move that from the final day, to the first day, and a week-day at that, a MONDAY. And while we're at it, lets move it from 1 pm in the afternoon to 8:30 at night. Oh, and for good measure lets change the route as well... Yea well you can imagine how pissed off a lot of people were about that. It was the first year in my 16 years in the city that I didn't go. - Sorry I, like many others, was working and would also have to get up early the next morning. I had friends coming up from New York and LA and Boston and Palm Springs for Pride in Montréal that year, they only got into the city on Thursday evening... just in time for the Weekend and all the big events (including the Parade) only to find out the parade was 4 days prior. They have not been back since.

Last year they attempted to re-adjust and moved it to a Saturday night... And because it was during the same time as the Out Games the attendance was better, and yes I went but let me tell you the parade was L-A-M-E. A parade at night works, if you're at Disney World and the floats are smothered in lights... when you're on Rene-Levesque with a few flatbed trucks you don't see squat... but then maybe that was for the best... it was not such a great idea to begin with.

---

And now, welcome to the year, 2007. The Divers/Cité Committee decided to no longer hold a Parade at all. They felt that Divers/Cité was now not a Pride event, but a 'Cultural event'. In the shadows of all the Big Circuit parties of the BBCM, what was once all about community is now about inflating their own egos and who can throw the biggest parties, spending the most money on things like hiring DJs and performers and lighting crew and on and on from OUTSIDE of the local community. This has never made sense to me and regardless of their explanations never will.

---

A new committee was created and was developed and Divers/Cité offered their support and services to help with the PRIDE parade, but apart and separate from the Divers/Cité event itself. The original date selected was in June when both New York and Toronto hold their Pride festivals. This time would prove a large conflict with Montréal as may people like to city hop and join in other Pride events. When you have 3 events in three large cites, relatively close at hand, such as these, having them all on the same date is counterproductive to all having successful event. It is no surprise then that that original replacement for Pride in Montréal crashed and burned, faster than you can say Disco Inferno!

It appeared that there was to be no parade, no Pride. I can tell you that I know a lot of people (including myself) that were very upset and disappointed by this. So many people already disenfranchised by the events and actions of Divers/Cité were now at an all time high..

And then *POOF* it seemed that a new organizations has arisen. Célébrations LGBTA Montréal In close association with the Gay Chamber of Commerce, they have done it. And like the Phoenix, Pride has risen from the ashes and will be held the Weekend BEFORE Divers/Cité (July 27 - 29th) and there WILL be a DAYTIME parade on Sunday! Ste-Catherine's will be closed in the Village and all is.

- - -

In the past few years, the Montréal Gay Chamber of Commerce SDC Village (Société de Développement Commercial du Village) has strengthened and after last years success of the street closure along Ste-Catherine St in the Village during the week of Divers/Cité and the Out Games, and the enthusiastic support of the restaurants and bars and other businesses, this year the Chamber of Commerce was able to get co-operation with the city to have a total of 6 weekends of street closures allowing all gay, straight or otherwise to enjoy leisurely strolls along Ste Catherine's and have a bite to eat al fresco or a chat over a couple drinks with friends. This past weekend was the 2nd of these weekends and it was wonderful! Didier and I along with countless thousands of others take full advantage of it every weekend.

Well, guess who's got their knickers all in a wad? YUP! the Divers/Cité Committee! Surprised?... no not really. They are upset and are trying to petition the city to rescind the permit the Chamber of Commerce has for the Street closure in the Village during the weekend of Aug 3-5th because they claim the Chamber of Commerce is trying to take advantage of Divers/Cité and all THEIR spectators and take business away from them. ... ok here are my problems with this...
1) If the Chamber of Commerce only asked and got one weekend of street closure I could see this as a potentially valid complaint, but they have SIX weeks...
2) Never before have the Divers/Cité events had sufficient enough bars and food vendors (with more than hot dogs and hamburgers) to properly manage the crowds, let alone the tables and washrooms, staff etc.
3) Like it or not, Street closure or not, many people will not only go INTO the village but STAY there not only for a drink or a meal, but because as I've said THAT is where they want to be!
4) Remember your name is DIVERS/CITE... you are supposed to be INCLUSIVE, not EXCLUSIVE.

They still wants all the Gay, Lesbian et'al's money of course, giving a very clear and present appearance of greed . It seems they are unable to share in the prosperity these events bring to the city. It's an all time low and it makes you wonder what they are really all about.

- - -

We'll be going to one event at Divers/Cité, MASCARA the night of Drag Queens. If it were not for this one event that I have not missed in the passed 5 years, I'd not be going to anything at all.

It seems that those that do not learn from the past are doomed to repeat it. hint hint ... Divers/Cité.

Here's hoping that the new Célébrations LGBTA Montréal organization sees the light. I wish them every success.

PRIDE means a lot to Montréal's Gay Lesbian, Bisexual, Transsexual and Transgender Communities. Thanks to Célébrations LGBTA Montréal for understanding.

The Weekend in Review (Didier's Birthday Weekend)

Friday night I was alone, it was the night of Didier's Association of French something something something's BBQ. so Misster-Kitty was Stag. And what does M-K do when left to his own devises? He goes to the Jean-Talon Market, then to the Gym, then to McDo and then home. He watches some TV and does a little posting and then goes out for a beer, goes back home and waits for his man.

Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

- - - - - - - - -

Saturday started off with a nice breakfast of home made blueberry pancakes, coffee and juice on the balcony. With Ste-Catherine St closed in the village to pedestrian traffic only we strolled around a bit, saw a few of our friends singing with the Gay Men's Chorus...

We sat watched and listened to them perform and then when they went on a break we headed off to the gym... the clouds were getting dark and the thunder had already begun to compete with their singing...

Once out of the gym we went for a stroll through some of the Just For Laughs festival. We walked around a bit and then caught a quick bite to eat at Frits Alors! Damn they do good Fries! Then back to the street and a bit more people watching. We went to walk up St-Denis to the Big balloon of Victor (the festival mascot) and his lady friend, Rose de Nantes. We didn't even make it up the one block from Ontario to Sherbrooke before the skies opened. So instead of looking at Victor and Rose we stood under them for about 10 minutes. When the rain lessened we snapped a few pics and then headed back in for refuge.

We went into La Capoterie and dare I say it was all just a little too tame... although there Was this really nice cook's apron with muscle man nude torso and scantily clad leopard print loin cloth. I might have to go back for that! Then a few more stops back down to the main festival and soon the rain stopped.

We thought we'd stick around a bit longer but well, good intentions , and a lame hypnotist... need I say more.

As it was, we got home about 5 minutes before it started raining again! We watched an episode of the 4400, Then rested a few minutes and then got dressed for dinner. Then took a walk in the rain. Didier still didn't know where I was taking him . Fun! Even better was on the walk we passed about 12 other restos and every once in a while I'd head directly for one of them, then psych him out. He finally guessed about 2 blocks away, but only because there was only the one restaurant left. LA MER. We are both from the Atlantic Coast, (Halifax, Nova Scotia and Nantes, France) We know good seafood, and this place has it! It was or first time there, but won't be our last. We both took the Lobster on their Table d'Hote. He took the Calamari starter, I took the chilled cucumber soup. (I've been burnt a few too many times with tough calamari so only order it once I know it's good) I had a couple of Didier's and I can tell you this, next time I'm there, that's all I want! I've NEVER had such good Calamari before in my life! We had a wonderful dinner, save for the heat in the resto, (it was a bit uncomfortable actually.)
We strolled home again, it was still raining... And then 10 minutes Graham and Tony arrived, brought a bottle of Pommery Champagne for Didier's Birthday... Champagne is the never fail gift for un vrai Français. Just time to toast the birthday boy...

... and have a little ice cream cake and it was time for the Fireworks. (See Saturday's Post) Then back in to look at the guy's wedding pictures.

- - - - - - - -
Sunday was relaxing. We had another leisurely breakfast, then we watched an episode of the 4400 (I HAVE to blog about this show!) and then a little reality... house cleaning. Then we went out for a walk around the village, chatted with some friends here and there and then had a bite to eat and a little bakery in the village La Tour du Pain - Great bread and pastries... and delicious simple sandwiches.

And then, yup you guessed it, back to the JFL.
(Me and Victor)
They had the floats form the Thursday night parade out on display (Here is Didier with the Mr Bean float)

... and it seems one of them at least, the Charlie Chaplin float was built in Nantes, Didier's home town!

(on the back of the float)...

We walked around again and them played from Checkers. Apparently there are many 'international rules' I'd never heard of before and lost readily to Didier. Never in all my years could you move in reverse and even when you were 'kinged' you could only jump to two squares away. Seems I was never taught the full set of rules. (Thanks for Nothing Nanny!)

Another walk around the festival and we headed back towards home. Picked up some Chinese take out and took a bottle of wine up to our roof, had a nice meal then wound down the night with one last episode of the 4400.
Not a bad weekend aver all.

Chatty-Cathy on the Crapper

I know I blogged on this one before, so I'll just refer you back to my original post...

All I can add today is ... same person, same stall...

GROSS!

Quote of the Week (14)

"Oh, splendid. This calls for a sexy party!"
~ Stewie Griffin
(Seth MacFarlane)

- - - - - - - - -

In my continuing efforts to grope Seth Green, I am again, this week, quoting Stewie Griffin.

(Hoping to win some meet n' greet passes for this weekend's Family Guy Live at Just For Laughs.)

Satan, if you're reading this... maybe we can come to some mutually beneficial agreement? Hmmm? What'dya say? ... we could have, um, a sexy party? ;-)

July 16th 2005

...after the Czech Republic fireworks 2 years ago I met you... and we've had fireworks ever since...

It's just the beginning.

Didier, I wish I could say in my own words what you mean to me, but I'll have to borrow the words from Barry White...

The first, the last, my everything
And the answer to all my dreams
You're my sun, my moon, my guiding star
My kind of wonderful, that's what you are

I know there's only, only one like you
There's no way they could have made two
You're all I'm living for
Your love I'll keep for evermore
You're the first, your the last, my everything

And with you I've found so many things
A love so new only you could bring
Can't you see it's you
You make me feel this way
You're like a fresh morning dew on a brand new day
I see so many ways that I
Can love you till the day I die
You're my reality, yet I'm lost in a dream
You're the first, the last, my everything

I know there's only, only one like you
There's no way they could have made two
Girl you're my reality
But I'm lost in a dream
You're the first, you're the last, my everything

Happy Anniversary Babe.

Love you.

IdFLQ - USA

Well there's one thing you can count on the good ole U S of A and that's good Fireworks! Always Big, always bold and always loud. This year was no exception. And as much as I hate to laud anything American, but well their Fireworks were stupendous! Music by Elvis! Nice! Never cared for him when I was younger, but I can appreciate his work now and it was well matched to the fireworks. Sure there was a bit too much Red White and Blue but well it's the states and you cant expect too much. They did have other colours, greens, yellows, purples and pinks and so on...

The skies held off the rain through the display and the winds were favourable, blowing the smoke away from us! Thanks mother nature!

This one was taken during 'Blue Suede Shoes'... just at the "Well it's one for the money,Two for the show,Three to get ready" part. There were three 1's, three 2's and then three 3's. You can see one of the 2's in this pic. Impressive no?! (Hong Kong did the 2's as well but I wasn't luck enough to get a pic...)

Here's our standings...

GOLD: USA
SILVER: England
BRONZE: Hong Kong

And then you have...
Spain
Mexico

Acrobats, Knife-Swallowers and Strippers, oh my!

Take one part, Burlesque, one part Vaudeville, one part Circus, one part Freak-Show, shake and stir and you get ...
This ain't your parent circus... (unless they were slightly sexually deviant and into freakshows and fringe society.)

Do yourselves a favor, and if you get the chance, go see them!

OH MY GOD! What a night!

It started with a Cabaret singer Michelangelo. The lyrics to his song were sexually explicit. We were off to a good start and the audience was soon well aware this was going to be a fun night. After his song the next act was a male duo of acrobats. Doing impossible poses and lifts including one where the 2nd guy was doing a one handed hand stand on the first guys head! for their encore they both stripped down to their Union Jack undies. WHAT BODS! wow! After them was a hula hoop act. She was amazing! at one point she had 4 hoops all going in different directions on different planes. Amazing! The came one of my favourite parts. Miss Behave...

She's a Sword Swollewer, also does a bit of slap stick and generally teases the audience. she came out 4 times in total, in a skin tight yellow and black latex dress! Among some of her routine, she swallows a pair of scissors, sticks a rose through the piercing hole in her tongue, swallows the leg of a bar stool and generally flirts and drinks too muck! I LOVE HER!

After Miss Behaves first routine, out came Frodo. He is what you can only describe as 100% freak!. He is a contortionist. Completely double jointed. She has a standard size tennis racquet and one with a diameter 2 inches smaller. Ho basically puts his entire body through the racquets. He has to dis-locate his shoulder to do this. Gross and yet riveting You can't HELP but watch...

Among the other acts, was a magic act. A sexy Spanish women basically strips while doing a little 'slight of hand' that involved a little red scarf that ended up in her skirt, bra, thong panty and well, her um... 'suzy' as I prefer to call it. ;-)Also in the show was another acrobat spinning and spiraling above the audience. The Spanish magician comes back and sings Guantanamera, Frodo the double jointed freak also does a balancing act. There's more singing, and audience teasing.
And then the favourite (for at least the four of us) a hunky guy in nothing but a pair of skin tight jeans that does an acrobatic act out of a tub. He spins around and above the audience, the front row is given a sheet of plastic to protect them from the water. The 2nd row gets nothing! Didier got a little drenched from the acts first spin over the audience. I also got splashed more than a few times, but when you see where the water is falling from you just don't mind! HAWT!

...now would you be upset if he got you a little bit... wet?

There was more but really, you gotta go yourself!

I actually want to go back again! It was a truly amazing show. Who wants to join me?

Didier's Birthday.

As mentioned yesterday, I took Didier out for a light dinner at Mi Burrito (Honestly, I don't know why they continue to bring us a menu, we've been there so many times and we always, ALWAYS get the same thing.) We had a great meal, Burritos, his shrimp, mine chicken with mole sauce (what else do you expect... their name IS Mi Burrito!) and of course... Margaritas.

We then walked down to the Just For Laughs site. Strolled around, watched some buskers, got an ice cream. Caught a cute pair of fire swallowers in Tiger and... wait for it... LEOPARD PRINT! You so know these were MY kinda preformers... Called FUEGO! (Am I the only one that didn't know that Fuego means Fire in Spanish!?) Anywho they were fun... the crowd enjoyed.

Now you KNOW... I HAD to get my pic taken with em...

We then headed down to St Laurent and De Maisonneuve to watch the festival's opening night parade.

It was all 'big heads' Didier was excited about this because a troupe of 'big heads' from his hometown, Nantes, France was there.

The Three Stooges...

Laurel and Hardy...

Charlie Chaplin...

Yea baby, yea!
It was short, and sweet just like that we headed up to the Just For Laughs Museum Cabaret for our main event...

When we got to the Museum the line up was around the block... LUCKILY ( we saw a couple we knew very near the front of the line) We bee-lined for them and kissed their cheeks (as if we were SUPPOSED to be meeting them...) and stayed with them in line. HA! I have never done that before and I know it cost me some Karma points, but ya know, sometimes you just gotta be that person. It WAS Didier's birthday, he NEEDED to have a good seat!

The venue is not big, there was a little round stage in the middle with seats ringing it for a few rows, and then there were two balconies. We were able to get into the 2nd row from the stage. It was an intimate setting, and you were at moments only inches away from the action.

(to be continued...)

One good Cirque deserves another.

If you'll recall, for my Birthday (back in March) my Man got tickets for the new Cirque du Soleil show 'Kooza' . The show was on April 25th and I posted a few times about the whole thang (here, here and here.)

Anywho... how can you top such a great birthday gift? Well I don't think you can, but you can come close...

So, tonight I'll be taking Didier out for a mini Birthday Dinner at our Fav Mexican joint, MI BURRITO, and then we're off to the Just For Laughs Festival. We'll try and catch the parade, and then we have tickets to Cirque La Clique. They are apparently incredible, a combination of Circus and Burlesque. Decidedly 'ADULT'. A bit risqué, titillating and naughty. They were at last year's JFL and were a smash hit, and added a couple extra shows at the end of the festival. This year they are showing DAILY for 3 weeks going beyond the start and finish of the actual festival itself.

I'm not sure is we're allowed to take pics, but I'll be taking my camera and a mini tripod (fits in your pocket) and will turn the flash off... so cross your fingers. Either way I'll update y'all demain.

- - -

As well, the 2nd half of Didier's Birthday gift is on Saturday. I'm taking to him to a yet undisclosed restaurant for a swanky meal. ;-)

Stay tuned for more!

VICTORY IS MINE!

QUOTE OF THE WEEK - JUST FOR LAUGHS SPECIAL EDITION

"I have so many people to thank, uh God of course and who else.... ah yes, Satan!"
~ Stewie Griffin
(Seth MacFarlane)

...to that I'd add, The gods, the fates and Mix96!
- - - - -

OK, if you recall on Monday, for my "Quote of the week" in a desperate attempt to gain favour amongst the fates, the gods, Mix96 I quoted Stewie from the Family Guy, in the hopes that it might help me win tickets to the (sold out) Family Guy Live show at this year's Just For Laughs Festival! Hey, you gotta send these things out into the Universe people...!

Well no one is more shocked than yours truly that I actually JUST W-O-N a PAIR o' tickets this AM on da radio-io-io!

I've been missing my chances all week because they usually have the call in whilst I'm subterranean on my commute. I got to work this morning, turned on the radio and they had not yet given their tickets away for the day.

My co-worker, Kelli and I dive on our re-dial when any Mix96 contest is on... we don't even know what we're calling in for some times... Well she got through and threw the phone over to me. God, me likey that Gal - She won tickets to the Scissor Sisters back in March and gave 'em to me cause she no really likey the S.S. except for "Don't feel like Dancing" and I think that's more because her 4 year old Rebecca love the song and is constantly confused when the chorus starts, because she's bopping along dancing and realizes even as she dancing that she's singing the words "I don't feel like dancing..." (PRICELESS!) - and what do you know? I won!

To win you had to name the 3 animated TV shows (cartoons y'all) from the sound bites of their opening themes. Funny thing is I'd never even seen one of them (#2), ever...
1) Flintstones (a CLASSIC)
2) The Archies (NEVER seen in my life, read the comics though as a kid)
3) King of the Hill (Yee haw)

Only snag... The tickets are for the same night we have planned a BBQ for visiting friends from France.. Can you say dilemma? yea... I can. I can also say a couple of expletives too! Well, we'll figure something out, cause I CAN-NOT miss this... I'm an INSANE fan of the Family Guy, this is too FREAKIN' SWEET!

Of course... this also means I'm one step closer to groping Seth Green!

Don't hate me because I'm beautiful, hate me because I have tickets to The Family Guy Live.
;-)

July 12th 1967

It's someone's birthday today.

It's someone's 40th birthday today.

It's someone's birthday today that I love more than anyone or anything else on the planet, well except maybe for Leopard Print... nah, MORE than even Leopard Print.

Your love is better than ice cream,
Better than anything else that I’ve tried.

Joyeux Anniversaire Babe!

IdFLQ - HONG KONG

Ok, well. The fireworks tonight WERE an improvement over last Saturday's, but well, then so would throwing a few sparklers up into the air...

Tonight was Hong Kong, and as a Chinese competitor, you expect a lot, and I mean a LOT. A few years ago the Chinese had fireworks that looked like 3 dimensional cubes. PHENOMINAL. You see something like that and you really want to see something as equally impressive. And it seemed that Hong Kong was well on their way...

Their opening was impressive. Large, high, colourful, and the music was up-beat. A few minutes in, you saw that they were were 'writing' on the sky. What they were writing was 2 0 0 8 The year the Summer Olympics will be in China. Now I'm on the fence on this... on the one hand, I was impressed with the creativity and thechnique to not only get an '8', but even more so a '2'. On the other hand, I was a little turned off on this being used even remotely as an advertisement for the Games.

Overall, the display was good, but I found it really failed to impress through the mid-section. It was a little too repetitive... 5 minutes of the same design and colour combination and you lose me... and repeat, repeat, repeat...

Their Finale was quite nice. Not as bombastic as I like em but as strong as their opener.

Ok enough babble, on to the pics...

It starts...

Me likey the purply-pink ones...

OK, now THIS is phunkadelic!...

Interesting, no?

Ouuuuuuuuuuuuuuu...

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh........

Sometimes small is impressive! ;-)

Getting close to the end...

Fi-nal-e!

And now...
Four competitors down...
Our scores are as follows:

GOLD: England
SILVER: Hong Kong
BRONZE: Spain
And then you have...

NEXT!

Ok, NGB requested it... so here we go...

A la 'SINGING BEE' you have to enter the next line of the song. (and please, be good... don't Google....)

- - - - - -

I have a picture, pinned to my wall.

Join me, won't you?

You ever hear a song, that no matter how much you dislike it you cannot help but hum or sing along with it... and then, god help you... you hear it in your head for the rest of the day? Yea we all have 'em, mine is "One Heart" by Céline Dion. It gives me a rash!

I personally blame Mix 96 for this continued torment...I ask N@ time and time again, please, stop playing that song. (Secretly I think she likes it, or at the very least likes the fact that the song gives me seizures) She played it AGAIN yesterday and I asked "WHY? does she have to keep playing it..."and then I asked, " Would it help if I created a petition?" She replied vaaaaaaaaaaaugly a 'maybe'...

Look, I'm not saying Céline is a bad singer, she's got her appeal and she's got her fans. Personally I don't mind her, and actually prefer when she is singing in french. There's some great stuff on "Deux". I don't go out of my way to NOT listen to her, but... this song... THIS SONG... "One Heart" ... it gives me cramps! And to make matters worse, when I hear it I end up humming and singing it for the rest of the day! I don't want to... but it's a curse, a jinx, a plague on me...

Well sometimes in life ya gotta draw a line in the sand, take a stand, fight the good fight. This, is mine. So, I've created a group on Facebook. Join me won't you...

You don't need to be in Montréal, you just need to NOT like the song "One Heart" by Céline Dion.

And if you don't have a Facebook account, feel free to join your name here.

Today "One Heart", Tomorrow "Umbrella".

Thanks you one and all!

(apologies to TickleBear)

I'm Lovin' It!

Ok, say what you want about the food at McDonalds.... I LURV McDo. Always have. Always will.

I only get to indulge when Didier is outta town or has a work function, and so July is MY Month! He is in Québec City tonight and the following two Mondays and this Friday he has a get-together with his Association of French something something something (It's a long name I can never remember... basically It's a bunch of Ex-pat Frenchmen and women that all went to the same school in France and now live here in Québec... There's a whole heapin' lot of 'em too! On one such outing there was over 130 of 'em!)

Annnnnnnnyhoo... the good news is I'm treating myself tonight and 3 more times in the coming weeks to my favourite fast food...

This is me... or at least soon will be!

Nautilus, here I come!

Quote of the Week (13)

"I don't need to fucking impress you."
~Stewie Griffin
(Seth MacFarlane)

In a 'tempting the fates' sorta way, I'm trying to impress someone, anyone (N@ can you hear me?), so that I may win some free tickets to the Family Guy Live at this year's Just for Laughs.

And if it's not too much to ask, dear fates, might I also be the grand winner and get to meet n' greet the cast? I promise not to grope Seth Green. (Ok, well, lets be realistic, I'll try not to grope Seth Green too hard...)

IdFLQ - MEXICO

Well, if you like White Fireworks, and practically nothing else, then Mexico was your night...

...for the rest of us however, who like a bit of variety and, dare I say it... COLOUR, well then Mexico was a bit of a snooze fest.

Add into that, a 5 min technical delay a mere 5 minutes inot their display, and you really begin to feel bad for them.

Their display was called "Chocolat" so we, being the good Chocolate lovers that we are, had HIGH expectations. It was not to be.

The music, it's one saving grace used a piece from my favourite Movie Composer... Ennio Morricone. They chose a piece from the movie The Misson which I absolutely love. As well they played some bizarre operatic corale version of La Bamba that we just over the top enough so as not to be enjoyable, and a spanish version of "My Way", which as Didier points out is NOT originally an American (Sinatra) song, but a French song called "Comme D'habitude" by Claude Francois.

Ok, enough babble, so you wanna see some pics...

It starts...

...and then, stops...

...and then starts again... Look closely, this is one of the few parts with colour...

Look, white fireworks...

Oh!, white fireworks...

Could it be? White fireworks...

Look Ma... White Fireworks...

Wait a minute... is that, colour?

Spoke too soon...

Gasp! White fireworks...

LOOK! If you look deep enough... hints of colour...

ANf finally, the finale... with, what's that? C-c-colour.

So, now, the moment you've patiently await... with three of the participants done, our scores are as follows:
GOLD: England
SILVER: Spain
BRONZE: Mexico

Mangos, and All That Jazz...

We went to the Jazz Festival tonight, oh, excuse me... LE Festival International de Jazz de Montreal. We'd be wanting to go since it started back on June 28th, but either because of conflicting schedules, prior engagements or crapola weather, i.e.. RAIN, we only managed to get there tonight.

It was nice, we walked from our place to the festival site, and since it was a Friday and the weather was on our side there were lots of others doing the same thing. We got their at about 8 pm and instantly got something to eat. Heh. Jazz-smazz there was a Mexican joint selling Mango Flowers... and me and Didz LOVES our Mango Flowers (the local Mexican Resto around the corner from us was selling them last year at Divers-Cite (Pride) and the Out Games. We couldn't walk past the place without buying some.) If you don't know what a Mango Flower is, take a look...

Didier...

Yours Truly (don't let the lack of Leopard Print fool ya, it's me)...

Now normal folk might have posed for the pics and smiled, looking into the camera holding the Flowers a staged distance from their mouths... not us, nosireebob, mango flowers were maid for eatin; not lookin at... If you get the chance to buy one do... it's such a refreshing alternative to an ice-cream (not that we have anything against ice cream mind you....) and if you do sprinkle your with the cayenne pepper/sour sugar... it makes it 1000 times more delish!

OK now where were we? oh yea, the Jazz fest.

...so with Mango in hand, literally, we waded into the throngs of people. We caught the last 30 minutes of Johanne Desforges at the Alcan stage. She was ok, not really our cup of tea. She did 'Summertime' from Porgy and Bess, and it was a little too 'scaty' for us. Scat is good, if you're Ella, but otherwise... Then we caught Ryan Shaw at the main GM stage. He was fantastic. From the Southern US. Great voice, and a crowd pleaser.

After that we took another stroll. Got ourselves a little something cool n' alcoholly to sip on at the Amarulla tent. If you've not had Amarulla before, you are missing out! (We got hooked on this stuff last year, it's great on it's own, in hot chocolate, and it makes a killer ice cream...) Didz took the Iced coffee and Amarulla and I took the Mango puree and Amarulla (YUM-MY!) and onwards we walked...

Ok now here's where my hatred of all things 'mass-o-people- took over. I wouldn't say I'm an agorophobe or demophobe... what I am a bit freakish about are throngs of stupid mouth breathers that constantly bump into you, need to be in the exact spot you are or are they type that walk at 1/10 the speed of the crowd, seemingly unaware of the reality of the fact that they are causing even more traffic and pissing off people a plenty.

So I am trying my best to NOT let all the idiots around me ruin my evening... but then this prig and his wife cut me off, not once, not twice but three times. And how might you ask is it possible to do this three times... well they were the aforementioned 1/10 speed people... They just HAD to cut in front of me and then WOULDN'T MOVE, so I maneuvered around them, only for them to miraculously appear in front of me again. After the third time, as we were approaching the stars I said to Didier, 'I'll be back...time for me to piss these people off' I managed to just cut in front of Mr. Prig as he was about to take his first step up the stairs. I then walked at 1/10 if THEIR speed up the 20 steps and then stopped dead in my tracks at the top to, look around... Call me petty, call me a bitch, I don't care, I enjoyed myself to no end! I live for those moments! :-)

...back to the Jazz...

We strolled around a few more minutes and at the Samsung stage enjoyed some jamming by a group called the Spam Allstars. They were comprised of a DJ spinning back beats, a percussionist, a Trombone, a Saxophone and a Flute. They were up-beat and had the crowd grooving and dancing, and just let the music take them were it would. It was a bit loud (god I am getting old) but otherwise very enjoyable. We took one last stroll around and then headed back home.

A short but Sweet (thank you Mango and Amarulla) evening at the Jazz Fest 2007.

When we got back the village we kept walking along Ste Catherine Street. For the next 6 weekends, Ste-Catherine Street, between St-Hubert and Papineau is closed to all automobile traffic. All the restaurants, cafe's and bars have set up terrases and even a lot of the small businesses have tables set up wit sidewalk sales. It's fun, relaxed and VERY enjoyable. I wish it was like this all the time. The street is full of people walking and watching. You see someone you know ever couple of black, chat a few minutes and then continue on walking. It's a wonderful way to spend a relaxing weekend, or afternoon. So anyone that's in Montreal, I highly recommend sauntering on over to the Village over the next 6 weekends and spend an evening or an afternoon. Promenade, and then take a meal or a drink ... or two... and just let the time pass. Watch the people walk past. Nothing better than a little people watching... and dog watching too! My god seems every 2nd person has a dog! If you want a recommendation on a great place to eat, I highly recommend Mi Burrito (Ste-Catherine and Panet.) if you go you might even see us there! They ALWAYS have 2 for 1 Margaritas... need I say more?

Word Association

Ok, y'all know how it goes...

Person one says a word, and person two says the first word that pops into their head. Lather, rinse, repeat...

As I'm ever impressed with the wit and wizzdom of my fellow bloglidytes, I thought it might be fun to see where this could go over the weekend.

So to get the ball rolling, I give you the first word...

Have a great weekend y'all!

Always fun to see where other people's minds go to a single word... and I'll be the first to say that not only does mine end up in the gutter, but that it's so nice to see so many familiar people there with me.

Canada Day, part deux

OK well, we're not as close to the foreworks for Canada Day... but I think I got a couple ok ones. I tried a couple on zoom but they was no good, so I had to take full pics and do major cropping. The detail is not so great, but for anyone that missed it, here's a couple of shots from the roof.
:-)

Yellow...

Purple spiders...

This one's not bad...

Well not so big but interesting and a wee bit sparkly...

The doublemint twins... twice!...

OK this one is botched, someone, and I'm not saying who... (Didier) was being a little wisenhiemmer and was bouncing up n' down on the roof. So this one is a bit wavey and shakey, but if you look at it close up, there's some fun details... so well, like that white gut with the 'fro on PBS, we have a happy accident...

Blue...

Blue, two...

The Jetsons...

Me likey this one...

Red n' White...

The finale...

And so, there you go...
Happy Canada y'all.

July 1st

Happy Canada Day to all !
Bonne Fête du Canada à tous !

O Canada! Our home and native land!
True patriot love in all thy sons command.
With glowing hearts we see thee rise,
The True North strong and free!
From far and wide, O Canada,
We stand on guard for thee.
God keep our land
Glorious and free!
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee;
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

O Canada! Where pines and maples grow,
Great prairies spread and Lordly rivers flow!
How dear to us thy broad domain,
From East to Western sea!
The land of hope for all who toil,
The true North strong and free!
God keep our land, glorious and free.
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee!
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee!

O Canada! Beneath thy shining skies,
May Stalwart sons, and gentle maidens rise.
To keep thee steadfast thro' the years,
From East to Western sea.
Our own beloved native land,
Our true North strong and free!
God keep our land, glorious and free.
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee!
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee!

Ruler supreme, who hearest humble prayer,
Hold our Dominion, in thy loving care.
Help us to find, O God, in thee,
A lasting rich reward.
As waiting for the better day,
We ever stand on guard.
God keep our land, glorious and free.
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee!
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee!

Ô Canada!
Terre de nos aïeux,
Ton front est ceint de fleurons glorieux!
Car ton bras sait porter l'épée,

Sa fière liberté;
