Thanks BobbyKatz. Thus far Santiago has a taste for the finer things... Ex: dry food. PAHTOOEH! he wants it mixed with wet food. Water... Only drinkable 5 minutes from the filter. Alas Senor will have to learn to slum it during the day when the water will go to room temp... So if we have a Puppy Shower I might just be looking for Puppy Maid and Butler service. ;-)
John, I honestly can't think who's the luckiest of us 3, Me cause I got the ultimate Christmas Gift, Santiago, cause he has a real home and two Papis, or Didier, cause I'll never nag him for another thing as long as I live (and YES I realize that's in writing, heh) Oh, and feel free to suggest tips on taking the perfect poochie pic... of course if you're ever in Mtl I'm sure we could bribe you into a couple paparazzi shots... no?
Kitty; absolutely I'll be happy to do photos for ya if I ever get back to MTL!
Tips: Get down brutha! Get down!!!! LOL For real though... get down, right to Santiago's eye level. Our eyes have a way of looking at a dog or a child and determining how small/big they are... and our brain adjusts the scene to make them appear at our eye level. But the camera can't do that... so get low and fill the frame with him! If he's motivated by treats (or toys or whatever) then dangle one beside/above/below the lens (careful not to block the flash.) I can actually make my dogs eyes move around and lock them where I want them (just like a photographer would ask you to do) with just a simple treat.
Flash is going to be a problem since your flash is on your camera and blasting light directly onto him... and is guaranteed to a) cause yucky shadows directly behind him making him look fat and b) result in the doggy equivalent to red eye (theirs is more green or yellow eye). So try your shots during even daylight (especially during light cloud cover!!!!)
If you put him somewhere where there's window light on one side, and something white on the other (you can use a shirt, a sheet, a towel, a big enough piece of paper; whatever you've got handy) you'll actually reflect some light back onto him! Use white though.. 'cuz light will pick up the colour of whatever it hits. (which is why pro flashes can be moved around - they're always looking for that white surface to hit... such as a ceiling.)
You could even angle your reflector a bit to the front or the back in order to add some natural looking light and shadows into the scene!
A small tripod might come in handy as well... or shove a few books under your camera until you get it to the right height - then it's balanced and you just have to concentrate on poses and hitting the happy button on the camera!
