Moses or NRA?

How do you remember Charlton Heston?

As Moses.. leading the chosen people out of bondage...

or as the President of National Rifle Association?

It's a tough call ain't it!? Two, so VERY different faces of the same man.

Watching the Ten Commandments is just something you do on Easter Weekend. I cannot imagine Easter without Chocolate or Charlton Heston as Moses. There's just something about that so, so, so very over the top epic. and even as much as I deplored his stance as president of the NRA. I'll write off the whole NRA thing to senility...

Me, I'm gonna remember him as Moses.

And lest we forget...
Planet of the Apes.
Ben-Hur.
El Cid.
Earthquake.
Airport 1975.

Soylent Green.
and my B-Classic fav...
...Omega Man.

Soylent Green for me, too.
..."Soylent Green is people!"

However, Charlton Heston lost touch with reality somewhere along the way...maybe being considered the representative for Moses on Earth will do that to you, but - as witnessed in Bowling For Columbine, by Michael Moore - Heston become nothing more than a huckster for the gun lobby, no matter what the cost of human lives having access to guns in the U.S. is responsible for.

I will remember him now as the man who exclaimed that we'd have to pry his precious gun - and the right to bear it - from his "cold, dead hands".

I wish I could remember a different Heston. The Heston who came to Halifax, on a night of a torrential downpour, stood in front of us at the premiere to his movie (shot in Nova Scotia - in beautiful Iona, Cape Breton), The Little Kidnappers, just four rows in front of me, and - in a quite charming manner - suggested it was not him who was making it rain that day. Even then, he was making references to his role as Moses, 34 years earlier. (Little Kidnappers was 1990. Ten Commandments was 1956.)

I wonder, as he lay dying, what he felt would be more important to be clutching in his hands - a gun, or the touch of someone who loved him, and who wanted him to live another day.

OH MY GOD! JB!!!!! The Little Kidnappers. I so forgot about that one!

Sadly for as good an actor as he was. he's left a pretty messed up legacy with the all the NRA gun-tottin' crapola... I hope he rests well with that at his back.

maybe, as he laid on his deathbed, a hand held his own & redeemed his way of thinking. here's hoping: l-o-v-e!!
